Plant Database Documentation
You can search the database by choosing the light conditions of your site. The query returns a list of species that meet the selected criteria.
The query results do not reflect the full complexity of plants and ecosystems, but can assist you in choosing plants for your site. Be advised, the data used in the search is based on the plants natural occurence patterns and not on what range of conditions the plant will tolerate. Many native species in cultivated situations can thrive in areas well beyond what one would find in a natural setting.
Each plant in the database has a shade coefficient (S); a number from -5 (shade) to +5 (sun). This number represents the estimated probability of natural occurence in shade vs. sun; so a species with an S of -5 almost always occurs in shade; a species with a S of +5 almost always occurs in sun. The shade coefficient numbers were created by Native Plant Nursery, either through assigning the numbers based on my observations, or looking through books and interpreting the text.
When choosing a site light condition in your search, such as sun or shade, the returned results cover a defined range of shade coefficients from the database
|Site Light Conditions||Search Criteria|
|shade||S less than 1|
|light shade||S less than 3|
|half sun/ half shade||S less than 4|
|mostly sun||S greater than -2|
|sun||S greater than -1|
